We practice a share-milking program on our homestead and leave the calf with the cow for a portion of the day. This enables me to only have to milk once per day (during most of the year), and I can leave for the weekend when I need to. However, since it’s been several generations since the family milk cow was commonplace, most folks have a bunch of questions on the topic. And that’s not surprising, since most of us (including myself) grew up with the white stuff from the store. Do you have to breed a cow to get milk?
Holsteins are the primary breed of cattle used by the commercial dairy industry. However, while they produce a very large quantity of milk, it has a lower butterfat content, and the milk may not be quite as nutritious as some of the other dairy breeds. Because the animals are in the barn at night, I have mounds of fresh manure mixed with hay that I can compost. Fresh composted manure is heaped on the garden in the fall and allowed to leach over the winter. Compost is also added in the spring, and we work the entire rich mixture into the soil to produce an excellent garden. Cows can live for up to 20 years provided they are well looked after.
Raising mini cows
In the days leading up to calving a cow’s udder will fill and her vulva will become swollen and loose. Calving is imminent when her ‘pin bones’, which are the ligament on either side of her tail-head, relax, and she takes on a ‘slab sided’ look, which is when the roundness of her belly is flattened by preparatory contractions. For a cow that has succumbed to mastitis the first immediate step is to consider the trigger and change or remove it, whilst also assessing the severity of the condition and whether a vet is needed. Personally, I think it would be a stretch to call anything that weighs 700 pounds “miniature.” However, they are the smallest naturally occurring (non-dwarf) cattle currently available. Cows range from 36 to 42 inches in height and can weigh up to 750 pounds. Bulls range from 38 to 44 inches tall and can weigh up to 1,000 pounds.

There are a significant number of legal requirements that must be fulfilled before you start buying animals for your herd. Cattle are classified as livestock and as a result you must obtain a county parish holding (CPH) number from the Rural Payment Agency (RPA), in order to keep them on your land. In addition, it is a requirement to apply for your own unique herd mark, which is issued by the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) in England, Scotland and Wales. Any cattle moved on or off your holding must be logged with the British Cattle Movement Service (BCMS) within 3 days and an up to date on farm herd register must also be maintained. Furthermore, regular compulsory testing for bovine tuberculosis must be carried out, usually by a trained veterinary surgeon (although sometimes an APHA Animal Health Officer may be sent).
How big are teacup mini cows?
It depends on where you live and what type of pasture you have available. And even though we have 60+ acres of pasture for our small herd of cattle and horses, we still end up feeding hay during the winter when the grass is dormant. If you plan on feeding hay year around, you can have a much smaller pen.

Thus, our beloved bovine thoroughbreds can easily be tipped out of balance and this will often present as problems in the areas under the greatest pressure with mastitis and metabolic disorders being the most common ailments.
Since Dexters are small-boned, they have a relatively high meat-to-bone ratio compared with some breeds. Ruby and Jet, our milking cows, line up to go into the milking stall. Ruby, as boss cow, is first; she eats her morning grain as I sit down on the milking crate and squeeze out the foamy fluid. Additionally, as cows produce waste and can easily create too much noise in a house, keeping them indoors rarely works out.
We have a small herd of other cattle and horses, so Miss Oakley generally gets lumped in with them. Again, the exact amount depends on the cow and what she is eating. Once we wean the calf in the fall and are milking twice daily, I can usually expect to get 3-4 gallons per day. And if we really pushed her production with grain, we could get even more.
